At one point, my kids asked me to discontinue because one of them was scared, but when I kept reading the book silently, they returned.
Also, I hate when books are falsely long. I mentioned this in my Sisters Grimm review. Proctor at least the Aladdin version contains giant spaces between the words and massive margins, I can only imagine because the publisher was trying to reincarnate Harry Potter.
And one more hurdle: Nesbo has a very distinctive writing style at least in these books that can make reading him difficult.
He is in love with the run-on sentence. He is also very fond of making his characters stutter in dialogue. The first thing I found mostly charming, the second annoyed me so much I edited it out after awhile.
As far as his language goes in translation, at least , it is at its best playful, at its worst, distracting or—heaven forbid—mediocre.
I love Roald Dahl. And yet, he is everything bad that could be said about Nesbo crass, violent, scary except for distracting. I ended up most invested in Nilly, and found many of the other characters flat.
I never could completely picture Doctor Proctor or Juliette Margarine in my head. But they were fun. And I snickered and chortled with the best of them at all the physical humor.
Plus, the fourth book ended up being the best. Too bad, because it looks pretty good and quite true to the spirit of the series. Perhaps they will subtitle which leaves the problem of kids and subtitles or remake it.
I detest dubs unless they are a particular type of animation. It is not currently available to us English-speakers.
Great fun for middle readers and adults of any age! Nesbo scores big with mixing history and time travelling bathtubs, literary devices, devilish characters, endearing main men like Nilly and Doctor Proctor, clever Lisa and new to the cast, Juliette.
Who can't appreciate the eighteen ton Congolose tse-tse elephant story at the beginning? Or fab verb fun fun on page 'And with that, the party was in full swing again.
People ran amok. They were crazed, frenzied, zany, brazen, pizzazy, and a bu Great fun for middle readers and adults of any age! They were crazed, frenzied, zany, brazen, pizzazy, and a bunch of other things with z's in them'.
Napoleon shows up along with the famous Eddy in one of his many Tours de France! There's lots of mayhem and action!
The themes of friendship, teamwork, caring, and really, a certain joie de vivre anchor this second book in the Doctor Proctor series.
Kids will truly love it and read long into the night under covers perhaps. There's magic in Fart power It could have been the mood I was in, but I just didn't feel like continuing on a journey with this book.
I am aware that he has written many crime novels which many wait for with bated breath, but that is not my genre, especially since I have been told they are very graphic.
Sorry, I am a wimp and like to sleep at night. I wasn't aware that he had written any children's books. We read it together in the family and both me, hubby and three-year-old Sigrid enjoyed it!
It is hard to imagine that the author of this fun and entertaining children's book is the same one writing the grisly stories of murder starring Harry Hole The first book I read that made me break away from picture books my dad accidentally bought book 2 instead of book 1.
It was a defining part of my childhood and made me want to be an inventor when I grew up. Such a good book! I loved it sooo much I cannot wait to read the rest of the series.
My favorite part was probably when Raspa found Nilly it was funny because all he cared about was breakfast! So hilarious. Fun for all ages.
So much time travel in this one we almost needed a map!!!!! Looking forward to the next adventure of these crazy characters.
A fun read though not as laugh out loud as the first book. Loved It! Reason for Reading: Next in the series.
The card is written in code. When they have figured out the message, they realise Dr. Proctor has gone back in history to rescue his beloved Juliette Margarine and now he needs their help.
So the two pack a few supplies including a baggie of Fart Powder, jump in the bathtub and set off for Paris Things get mixed up and Nilly and Lisa end up in separate places and the two of them travel through French history sometimes meeting up with Doctor Proctor or Juliette Margarine.
But all the while they are being tracked by Dr. Proctor's former assistant, now evil, who wishes revenge against him.
I enjoyed this story and thought it was fun. I enjoyed the historical sidetracks and the tongue in cheek jokes about the historical figures.
The book has various big humor scenes and Nilly and Lisa are a pleasure, just as they were in the first book. However, I do have some issues with this second book in the series.
Both books are recommended by the publisher for ages and the first book is certainly within that age range and would even make a great read aloud for ages This book, however, is written for a different audience.
The older end of the age range, say The silly goofy humour is more subtle and not so obvious, if one doesn't know who the historical figures are or about the time periods the fun is going to be lost on the reader and finally, the grown-up love story between Doctor Proctor and Juliette Margarine while very low key is going to turn off some boy readers.
I know my son would flip at all the times the word "love" is used. I won't be passing this one onto my son for bedtime story reading as I know it's not his type of book, at all.
Myself, I'm glad I read it and did enjoy it, though I wish it was more like the first book. A third book has already been written in Norway, so we can expect another coming to North America sometime in the future and I will be reading it, hoping for a return of the more farcical storyline of "Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder".
Fortunately, the book does not rely on any events from the first book for its plot, though some events are summarized, and they can be read independently of each other.
Recommended This is the 2nd book of the series, but it is easy to follow along as a stand alone book. The importance of friendship comes up several times throughout the book.
Readers will get to meet Napoleon just before the battle of Waterloo, Joan of Arc, and see the Tour de France, along with a few other famous figures.
Lisa and Nilly try to find Doctor Proctor by using his special time-traveling bathtub and the special time soap. There is not a lot of Time Soap left, so they have to be careful with how much they use.
They are also not allowed to change history. The end of the story proves to readers that love and friendship will get you through the tough time in life.
I was very skeptical when I first started this book. Overall, this book surprised me and it turned out to be a fun, yet crazy, adventure.
It is an international author for US schools and there are a lot of European cities and references, that students will get a more global perspective from reading this fiction book.
I think it would also be a good choice for reluctant boy readers, although girls would enjoy it too. I think it is appropriate for both school and public libraries.
My son loved the Waterloo fart I mean- part ; but not much more. The 3rd star is out of my sentiment to Jo ;.
Good god what a title. I don't want to be seen reading this in public. Or heard, since I am reading this out loud to my 8-year-old. This is one of those books that the reading level is too difficult for the maturity level.
My kid just doesn't get why I find Innebrede, the town in France where everyone's related, so funny. So, on this adventure, Nilly and Lisa are asked by time-travelling postcard to come to Paris and help Dr Proctor, who is trapped in time.
They have quite the romp through time wi Good god what a title. It is a romp, it is often funny and clever, and much of it goes flying over a 2nd grader's head.
He doesn't really know what margarine is, so doesn't find Juliette Margarine's name--or Margarine Castle--very funny.
We are butter people. I had to explain what bowl cuts are. He has been studying Joan of Arc at school, and got excited to hear about her.
He learned about Napoleon and Waterloo, and what a sabre is. We have listened to the Marseillaise on youtube. All in all, we enjoyed this--I certainly found it much more enjoyable than the first book.
Less farting, much more time-traveling bathtub.
